The Painted Question

Do we stand before a canvas
Or behold it from within,
Where in panoramic romance,
Does the painted edge begin?
Are we simply an observer,
Or become somehow as one,
Consciousness redrawn forever,
As wet colors meld and run?
Does an image without witness,
Become darkness hung in air,
Does a thought prove our existence,
If perception goes unshared?
Is each painting left unfinished,
While it patiently awaits,
One last stroke to fall upon it,
As the soul applies its shade.
